What is Brazilian Jiu Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art initially developed in the early 1900s by the Gracie family. The Gracies learned Japanese jiu-jitsu & Judo from traveling Japanese Martial Arts Masters, Whereas Judo was primarily focused on throwing techniques, BJJ gradually evolved to become more focused on ground fighting.

What Makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Different To Other Styles Of Martial Arts?

Whereas many other martial arts mainly focus on kicking or punching, BJJ is primarily focused on ground fighting & the concept that a smaller person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using holds and submissions to defeat them.

Why is Brazilian Jiu Jiu Jitsu training a great way to get fit & lose weight?

Many of our current BJJ students began training as a way of keeping fit. BJJ is a great workout because it is always physically and mentally challenging. One of the problems with traditional weight loss or fitness programs such as running on a treadmill is that they can get boring within a short time.

BJJ is suitable for everyone. One of the great things about BJJ is that there is such a variety of techniques that you will always be able to find the right techniques to fit your body type. You don’t need to be flexible, strong or have great cardio to get started (although you will certainly develop those attributes through your training)
